VALLEY FORGE, Pa. — Ornella Barra, executive vice president of Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., has joined the board of directors at AmerisourceBergen Corp.

AmerisourceBergen said Barra, who also is president and chief executive officer of global wholesale and international retail at Walgreens Boots Alliance, takes the board seat vacated by former Walgreen Co. president and CEO Greg Wasson.

Wasson resigned from the AmerisourceBergen board on Jan. 9 following his retirement from Walgreens, which came shortly after the formation of Walgreens Boots Alliance, the public holding company created by the Walgreens-Alliance Boots GmbH global partnership.

Walgreens Boots Alliance is entitled to name a director — including a successor to fill an unexpired term — to the AmerisourceBergen board as part of its long-term relationship with the pharmaceutical distributor, according to AmerisourceBergen. Barra hasn’t been appointed to any committees of the board.

"I am thrilled to have Ornella join our board of directors," Steven Collis, president and CEO of AmerisourceBergen, said in a statement. "She has a deep understanding of the needs of our customers, including pharmacists, and the demands of running a global enterprise. I am confident that Ornella will contribute in countless ways as we continue to advance AmerisourceBergen’s strategic goals and objectives."

Before her current roles at Walgreens Boots Alliance, Barra was CEO of wholesale and brands at Alliance Boots. She previously served as CEO of the pharmaceutical wholesale division and, prior to that, as wholesale and commercial affairs director.

Barra is chairman of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Wholesalers (IFPW) and a member of the board of Assicurazioni Generali. She started her career as a pharmacist in Italy and is an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham School of Pharmacy.

"We are very pleased to have Ornella join the AmerisourceBergen board of directors," stated Richard Gozon, AmerisourceBergen chairman. "Her extensive experience in wholesale pharmaceutical distribution and international health and pharmaceutical retail industries and strategic insight will be an asset to our board, particularly as we continue to grow our global operations. Ms. Barra also provides a valuable perspective on our strategic relationship and collaboration with Walgreens Boots Alliance."

Gozon added about the departure of Wasson, "Mr. Wasson has garnered tremendous respect from the board during his tenure, and the board wishes to thank him for his contributions to the continuing success of AmerisourceBergen."
