WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Caremark, the pharmacy benefit management unit of CVS Health, has received mail service pharmacy accreditation from URAC, a Washington, D.C.-based health care standards organization.

CVS said Tuesday that URAC’s Mail Service Pharmacy Accreditation covers standards on core organizational quality, customer service, communications and disclosure, drug utilization management and pharmacy operations, as well as a process for mail service outcomes measurement and quality improvement.

Mail service pharmacy is typically used by patients who require maintenance medications for chronic conditions and get their maintenance drugs in dosages of 90-day supplies or longer, CVS noted.

“We are pleased to receive accreditation from URAC, which underscores our commitment to providing high-quality mail pharmacy services to our millions of members who utilize this important pharmacy distribution channel,” CVS Caremark president Jon Roberts said in a statement. “Mail service pharmacy provides our members with a convenient way of getting their prescriptions and also encourages medication adherence, which is especially important for those with chronic conditions requiring maintenance medications.”

Along with its goal to uphold quality services, the URAC accreditation process serves as a framework to improve business processes via benchmarking organizations against nationally recognized standards, according to CVS. The URAC standards development process is consensus driven, with industry experts serving as volunteers to establish and revise industry benchmarks.
