Central Florida Walgreens pharmacies offer swine flu shots

December 14th, 2009

DEERFIELD, Ill. – More than 100 Walgreens pharmacies in central Florida have started providing H1N1 "swine flu" vaccinations.

Walgreen Co. said Monday that H1N1 injectable and nasal vaccines are now being offered at drug stores in Florida's Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Sumter and Marion counties. Also, Take Care health clinics at nine Walgreens locations in the Orlando area are offering the immunizations.

The vaccines, which cost $18, are available on a walk-in basis as well as during scheduled H1N1 clinics. Walgreens said its pharmacists in Florida can immunize those age 18 and older, while nurses attending select clinics at Walgreens stores can provide the immunizations to those age 2 and older. Take Care clinics, too, can immunize patients age 2 and older.

Local health departments throughout Central Florida have recently broadened recommendations on who should get an H1N1 vaccination to include everyone over the age of six months, according to Walgreens. With priority group restrictions eased, the drug chain is making H1N1 vaccine available to all residents in these counties who meet state age requirements.

Walgreens said it plans to offer H1N1 vaccinations in additional counties throughout central Florida in the coming weeks as supply becomes available. Walgreens and its Take Care Health Systems subsidiary are working closely with public health officials to serve as a statewide distribution partner for the H1N1 vaccine and a source of H1N1 immunization information.

Florida is one of 31 states where Walgreens is currently offering H1N1 vaccinations. The company recently announced rollouts of the vaccine in the Chicago area and Louisiana earlier this month and in the Salt Lake City area last month.
