Duane Reade bolsters merchandising team
July 28th, 2009
NEW YORK – In line with its store optimization and marketing efforts, Duane Reade Inc. has made some additions and changes to its merchandising team.
The drug store chain has hired Paul Tiberio as senior director of category management. In that role, he will lead the category management team and help redefine the Duane Reade brand through the development and implementation of product and promotional strategies, the company said.
Tiberio joins Duane Reade from Shaws Supermarkets, where he was vice president of center store merchandising. He has 20 years of retail experience, including buying, merchandising and operations.
Lee Colarco will assume the newly created post of vice president of merchandising. Formerly a vice president of category management, Colarco now will assume a sales-focused function, according to Duane Reade. As a seller, she will develop and implement store merchandising initiatives that will allow the 253-store chain to better capitalize on the metropolitan New York landscape, the company said.
Michael Winer, a recent addition to Duane Reade, will lead analytics for the organization as director of analytics and process engineering. He brings to the company food and drug retail experience in product management, buying, merchandising, supply chain and operations.
Duane Reade also named two new general merchandise managers (GMMs). Scott McCulloch joins the company as health GMM, bringing extensive experience in retail and wholesale. Most recently, he served as the head merchant at The Vitamin Shop, where he was responsible for merchandising and brand development.
Meanwhile, category manager Jackie Burrell has been promoted to convenience GMM. The company said that Burrell has helped develop new category standards that have boosted sales and margin, and her prior experience in the grocery industry positions her well for the new role.
In addition, Duane Reade said Primo Muñoz will take on key convenience categories, leveraging his experience in the North/West market in the mass and food channels to enhance the chain's product assortment.
Nathan West also joins the company as merchandising financial analyst, responsible for front-store financial reporting, forecasting and budgeting. And Sharon Matthew has been named product manager for private brands, bringing experience from the consumer packaged goods industry in the United Kingdom and North America as well as retail analytics and strategy expertise.
Duane Reade has been aggressively remodeling stores, including improvements to store layouts, signage and merchandising, as well as beefing up its pharmacy operation as it fortifies its presence in the metro New York marketplace, which has seen an influx of competition from chain drug and mass market retailers.
Billing itself as "uniquely New York," Duane Reade earlier this month kicked off a major advertising blitz, with the chain's messages appearing in thousands of subway cars and buses as well as on phone kiosks, billboards and urban panels near rail stations.
