May 16th, 2014

ARLINGTON, Va. – Ben Bernanke, former chairman of the Federal Reserve System, will be one of the keynote speakers at the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Total Store Expo in Boston this August.

Ben Bernanke

NACDS said Thursday that Bernanke, who served as Fed chairman from 2006 to 2014, will address the morning business program on Aug. 24 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. The NACDS Total Store Expo runs Aug. 23 to 26.

Bernanke is credited with helping to stabilize the U.S. financial system and guide the nation through one of its most fiscally trying periods during the recession that took hold in 2008.

"When you think about who's best to forecast the nation's economic and business climate, Dr. Bernanke is hands-down the leading authority," NACDS president and chief executive officer Steve Anderson said in a statement. "During his time as chairman of the Federal Reserve, Dr. Bernanke's financial expertise has led the nation through some of its challenging financial times, and as our industry continues to evolve and change we look forward to listening to and learning from his experiences.

"Offering NACDS Total Store Expo attendees the opportunity to hear from national leaders such as Dr. Bernanke illustrates NACDS' commitment to its members in providing timely and relevant programming to help retailers and suppliers meet with success" Anderson added.

Bernanke served two terms as chairman of the Fed's Board of Governors from 2006 to 2014. Before his appointment as chairman, he was chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers from 2005-06. He also served in several other roles within the Federal Reserve System, including a member of the Board of Governors from 2002-05. He currently is a Distinguished Fellow in Residence at The Brookings Institutio.

Before his government service, Bernanke also demonstrated leadership in academia, NACDS noted. From 1994 to 1996, he was the Class of 1926 Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University. In addition, he was the Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Economics and Public Affairs and chair of the Economics Department at the university from 1996 to 2002. Bernanke also taught economics at Stanford University (1979-1985) as well as at New York University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
