Healthcare Clinic enters Dallas-Forth Worth market

August 13th, 2014

DEERFIELD, Ill. – Walgreen Co.'s Healthcare Clinic has opened its first retail clinic in the Dallas-Forth Worth metropolitan area and aims to add more locations this year.

Walgreens said Wednesday that the first Healthcare Clinic in the market opened July 28 in Southlake, Texas, about midway between the cities of Forth Worth and Dallas.

Plans call for a dozen more of the walk-in medical clinics, which are located inside Walgreens drug stores, to open in the Dallas Metroplex by the end of 2014. Those include clinics in Arlington, Burleson, Carrollton, Dallas (two), Forth Worth (two), Hurst, Mckinney, Plano, Rockwall and Waxahachie.

"Our expansion into Dallas-Fort Worth reflects our continued effort to enhance access to high-quality, affordable care and well-being services in our communities," Suzanne Hansen, Walgreens group vice president for Healthcare Clinic, said in a statement. "There is an ever-increasing demand for health care resources in today's environment. With our track record of success and a longtime presence in the Houston market, we're confident Healthcare Clinic nurse practitioners can play an important role in working collaboratively with other providers in the community and providing personalized care."

Also in Texas, Walgreens plans to add 14 more Healthcare Clinics in the Houston area, which currently has 15 of the clinics. Overall, Walgreens has more than 400 Healthcare Clinics in 23 states and Washington, D.C.

Walgreens noted that consumers are relying more on retail clinics to provide chronic care and preventive health services. In a study of its Healthcare Clinic subsidiary, Walgreens found that the percentage of visits for preventive services, health screenings and chronic illnesses rose to 17% in 2013 from 4% in 2007 to 17% in 2013. The study also found the annual percentage of return patient visits to Healthcare Clinic jumped to more than 50% in 2013 and 2012 from 15% in 2007.
