NACDS retail board to visit London market
February 21st, 2014
ARLINGTON, Va. – Next week, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Retail Advisory Board plans to cross the Atlantic to gain some insight on retailing trends in London.
NACDS said the Feb. 25 trip will include the NACDS Retail Advisory Board's team of 64 manufacturers, retailers and suppliers, who will focus on such marketplace trends as multigenerational retailing, how the omnichannel enhancing the shopping experience, urban retailing and managing over-the-counter medications.
According to Bryan Stuke, chairman of the NACDS Retail Advisory Board and vice president of customer business development at Procter & Gamble Co., the excursion will provide an opportunity to observe how British retailers are managing the needs of aging consumers, given that Great Britain's population is aging a few years ahead of the U.S. population, which is seeing baby boomers become senior citizens.
Stuke noted that London — a populous, diverse European capital — also provides some perspective on a growing retail trend in the United States: urbanization.
The group plans to tour such stores as Boots, Burberry's, Marks & Spencer and Tesco. A speaker from Nielsen will also present on the British retail market, spotlighting the differences between British and U.S. stores. Beyond merchandising, supply chain and store operations, the NACDS team will also look at how British retailers are becoming omnichannel, leveraging the Internet, mobile platforms and the physical store to help consumers shop for and pick up merchandise whenever and wherever they want.
In addition, representatives from the U.S. embassy will address policy issues in the United Kingdom and European Union, such as privacy concerns and how the embassy can help U.S. companies in England.
"There's a nice mix of retailers and manufacturers on the trip," Stuke commented, "so there's going to be quite a bit of interaction between the retailers and the manufacturers in a nontraditional setting. It's pure learning and sharing."
NACDS said the "market immersion" trip will be the fourth for the Retail Advisory Board. Past trips included Toronto; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Austin, Texas. The group plans to travel to Boston in May.
Stuke added that the goal is to identify markets with new retail ideas and new retail formats. The trips, he stated, "allow retailers and manufacturers to walk a store together to discover new ideas on how they can merchandise their stores, product categories, adjacencies or product lines better."
Also this week, NACDS announced that Haley Barbour, former governor of Mississippi and former chairman of the Republican Governor's Association, will be the keynote for the NACDS Chain Members and Political Action Committee Breakfast at the 2014 NACDS Annual Meeting.
Barbour, who also served two terms as chairman of the Republican National Committee, will address breakfast attendees on April 28. The NACDS Annual Meeting will be held from April 26 to 29 at The Phoenician in in Scottsdale, Ariz.
