New Duane Reade flagship store to open on Wall Street

July 5th, 2011

NEW YORK – In line with its "New York living" marketing theme, Duane Reade is set to open its new flagship store at an iconic Manhattan location: 40 Wall Street, currently the site of The Trump Building and at one time the world's tallest building.

The new Duane Reade store in The Trump Building at 40 Wall Street "is the latest phase in introducing our iconic New York brand to its modern relevancy with our New York metropolitan-area customers," said Joe Magnacca, the chain's president.

The urban drug chain, part of Walgreen Co., said it plans to open the new 22,000-square-foot store on Wednesday. According to the retailer, the 24-hour location will be one of its most innovative stores and have an up-market focus in health, food and beauty offerings along with "exclusive services and amenities never before seen in a Duane Reade or any other drug store."

Setting the tone for the location will be The Virtual Assistant, which will welcome customers as the enter and introduce them to the store's many new features via holographic imaging and audiovisual technology that creates the illusion of a real person. The virtual greeter was custom-designed for Duane Reade by Tensator, a provider of queue management and digital signage solutions.

"This space signifies great historical achievement, where it took workers just 93 days to build the entire steel frame of this 72-story building in 1930. Since then, it has been transformed for the new era, mirroring Duane Reade's strategic brand repositioning today," Joe Magnacca, president of Duane Reade, said in a statement.

"40 Wall Street is the latest phase in introducing our iconic New York brand to its modern relevancy with our New York metropolitan-area customers," added Magnacca, who also is president of daily living products and solutions for Walgreens.

The site will house Duane Reade's first pharmacy signified as "Powered by Walgreens Pharmacy Network," linking it to the Walgreens pharmacy system. New Yorkers, out-of-state residents and visitors will be able to have their Walgreens pharmacy information available at this Duane Reade store as well as receive "prescription ready" text messages, the retailer said. The pharmacy site also will include Duane Reade's Doctor On Premises walk-in health clinic.

Duane Reade noted that the 40 Wall Street store will reflect its "New York Living Made Easy" mantra in the front end with such features as the Sushi Station, featuring a chef and full menu from edamame to elaborate rolls; The Juice Market, offering fresh-made specialty themed smoothies; a Starbucks coffee and fresh bakery counter; a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine dispensing 130 varieties of Coca-Cola fountain drinks; and an expanded natural and organic products section containing fresh fruit, vegetables, wraps, sandwiches and salads made daily.

"The fresh and healthy food offerings will be unparalleled within the drug store industry," stated Paul Tiberio, senior vice president of merchandising and chief marketing officer for Duane Reade. "As our customers shop across fewer retailers, we have positioned 40 Wall Street to best service the 'need-it-now' trips of the area's growing residential and professional populations, offering an up-market fresh food proposition and their one-stop-shop solution."

The store's beauty department will contain Duane Reade's Look Boutique, offering before/after virtual makeovers, skin analysis from Philips Crystalize, and an automatic fragrance sampler that will enable customers to try over 40 scents on their wrist. A nail salon will feature manicures, gels, the latest colors from OPI and essie, and a hair salon by Phyto Universe providing such services as hair/scalp analysis, blowouts and styling from a certified hair care professional. High-end, salon-grade skin/hair products and accessories will be available from Nuxe and other brands.

In addition, the store will offer fresh flowers daily for any occasion as well as house what Duane Reade said is its biggest HP digital photo center to date. A retro-styled, mahogany-polished shoe shine area will donate proceeds to New York-based philanthropic organizations via the Duane Reade Charitable Foundation.

And reflecting the store's Wall Street locale, a newsstand will be stocked with papers from financial centers worldwide, a cell phone charging station will allow customers to lock their device and power up while they shop, and a 20-foot New York Stock Exchange in-store ticker will display stock price, news and sports feeds.

"This store represents a milestone, with the best ideas of Duane Reade and Walgreens setting a new benchmark for health and daily living," Greg Wasson, president and chief executive officer of Walgreens, said in a statement. "As part of the Walgreens family of companies, Duane Reade is taking an important step in its highly visible rebranding initiatives with the opening of this store."

Last July, Duane Reade had designated a new store opened in Manhattan's Union Square as its flagship location. The chain said at the time that the approximately 14,000-square-foot location, situated on East 14th Street at the south end of Union Square Park, was its largest drug store to date.
