Sam's Club serves up heart health checkups
February 4th, 2011
BENTONVILLE, Ark. – This month, Sam's Club is offering free heart health screenings through its warehouse club pharmacies nationwide.
The Walmart subsidiary said Friday that Sam's Club members and guests can participate in the free heart health screenings throughout February, which is American Heart Month.
The screenings are valued at more than $150 and can help people detect a range of preventable health problems. The heart health checks include blood pressure checkups; body mass index (BMI) assessment; total cholesterol, HDL and risk ratio; and a personal consultation from a licensed pharmacist on patients' prescription drug medications.
Sam's Club, which has more than 500 pharmacies, noted that it offers free health screenings monthly, with each event focusing on a different health topic or disease state.
Also during February, Sam's Club is providing a free prescription checkup on any medication along with a free 10-count sample of its Member's Mark Fish Oil supplements.
The wholesale club retailer, over roughly the past six months, has worked to expand its pharmacy and health care services.
In January, Sam's Club announced that it will offer members The Prevention Plan, a health management services from U.S. Preventive Medicine, for $99. And in the fall the chain launched Making Sense of Your Medications, an awareness campaign urging patients to consult with a Sam's Club pharmacist to review their medications. Also, over the summer, the retailer introduced a pharmacy satisfaction program and launched its Ready Reminders prescription pickup alert service.
Sam's Club noted that it gets high marks for its pharmacy service. The J.D. Power and Associates 2010 National Pharmacy Study, which was released in September and rated brick-and-mortar pharmacies in terms of customer satisfaction, gave Sam's Club strong marks in the areas of prescription ordering and pickup, pharmacy and nonpharmacy staff, cost and the overall pharmacy experience.
Overall in the J.D. Power study, Sam's Club tied with Costco for the second-highest pharmacy customer satisfaction rating (844) in the mass merchandiser field, which was led by Target (848). Sam's Club's score bested the average rating in the chain drug store segment (805) and was higher than the scores of the nation's three biggest drug chains.
