DEERFIELD, Ill. – In a series of personnel moves, Walgreen Co. has promoted executives in finance, facilities and real estate and has filled out its merchandising team.

Wade Miquelon has been promoted to executive vice president and chief financial officer, and John Spina has been promoted to corporate vice president of retail integration and new format development. Walgreens said the promotions were effective July 1.

Miquelon, 44, joined Walgreens as senior vice president and chief financial officer in June 2008. He will continue his responsibilities for the company’s accounting, tax and treasury functions, including investor relations.

“In the short time he’s been with Walgreens, Wade has delivered tremendous value while bringing effective change that’s showing results,” Walgreens president and chief executive officer Greg Wasson said in a statement.

Spina, 50, had served as vice president and treasurer since 2007. In his new role, he is responsible for helping Walgreens integrate new businesses as well as develop new store formats and boost performance from current formats through more flexible layouts, according to the company.

“Throughout his lengthy Walgreens career, John has demonstrated the ability to uncover opportunities and lead teams through complex projects,” remarked Wasson. “There’s no one better to take on this new challenge as we seek more innovative ways to leverage the best store network in America.”

Walgreens said it plans to name a new treasurer soon.

The drug store chain noted that it also has hired Steve Broughton as its new general merchandise manager and divisional vice president for consumables. Broughton previously spent 23 years at Wal-Mart Stores Inc., most recently as vice president and divisional merchandise manager for food and consumables.

In mid-June, Walgreens had hired three executives for its purchasing team as divisional vice presidents and general merchandise managers, two of whom joined the company from Wal-Mart.

Walgreens said it also has promoted Bruce Schmiedl from director of facilities planning, design and engineering to divisional vice president. He joined the company in 1993 as a project architect and most recently served as a senior project architect, both in facilities planning, design and engineering.

Also, the company has promoted Bob Roscoe from director of asset development to divisional vice president. He now is responsible for property acquisition and development and specialty real estate. Roscoe, with Walgreens since 1973, previously served as a senior real estate manager.
