Oral-B to debut interactive toothbrush with smartphone app
February 21st, 2014
CINCINNATI – Oral-B next week plans to introduce what it describes as a "first of its kind" interactive electric toothbrush with Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.
The Procter & Gamble oral care brand said the interactive toothbrush will make its debut in the GSMA Connected City exhibition space at Mobile World Congress 2014, which begins Monday, Feb. 24, in Barcelona, Spain.
Plans call for the Bluetooth 4.0 technology to be available in a range of Oral-B electric toothbrushes, including the new Oral-B SmartSeries.
P&G said that the interactive powered toothbrush connects via Bluetooth 4.0 technology to the Oral-B App, an iOS and Android smartphone app that provides real-time guidance as the user brushes and records brushing activity as data that can be charted and shared with dental health professionals. That information, in turn, can help people devise smarter, more personalized brushing routines.
"We're proud to introduce this new interactive electric toothbrush with Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, which was developed in conjunction with leading dental experts around the globe," stated Wayne Randall, vice president, of global oral care at P&G. "It provides the highest degree of user interaction to track your oral care habits to help improve your oral health, and we believe it will have significant impact on the future of personal oral care, providing data-based solutions for oral health and making the relationship between dental professionals and patients a more collaborative one."
Two-way communication is a key feature of the Oral-B App, P&G noted, since brushing data is received and reported back to the user, who also can program the app to communicate with the brush for personalized brushing. Dental professionals, too, can program patients' brushing routines in the app to help improve their brushing and focus on problem zones within the mouth.
Users of the Oral-B App also can use their smartphone as a remote control to customize their brush to their needs, including setting target session length for brushing and selecting preferred modes.
And since it's not always convenient or easy for users to remember to bring their smartphone to the bathroom each time they brush, the Oral-B interactive electric toothbrush handle can store up to 20 brushing sessions. The data is transferred to the app to update records the next time that it connects to the toothbrush.
The Oral-B App provides real-time guidance as the user brushes and records brushing activity.
In addition, the app helps maintain the user's attention and motivation while brushing by providing news, weather and oral care tips.
P&G said that tests of the app have shown that when connected, brushing time increases from less than 60 seconds with a manual toothbrush to 2 minutes and 16 seconds with an electric toothbrush, exceeding the dental professionals' recommendation of 2 minutes per session.
Meanwhile, the new Oral-B SmartSeries powered toothbrush links to the Oral-B app via with Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. The brush features oscillating-rotating-pulsating technology that removes up to 100% more plaque than a regular manual toothbrush and offers six cleaning modes (daily cleaning, deep clean, whitening, gum care, sensitive and tongue cleaning).
The SmartSeries also is compatible with six varieties of brush heads — CrossAction, Precision Clean, 3D White, Sensitive, Floss Action and TriZone — and features a pressure sensor that signals and decelerates the speed when the user is brushing too hard. Travel accessories also protect the brush and charger during travel.
According to P&G, the new Oral-B interactive electric toothbrush with Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity and the Oral-B App will be available in limited quantities in Germany this spring. A global rollout, including the SmartSeries, is slated for June 2014.
The new Oral-B App will be available for iOS mobile devices in May and for Android devices in August, the company said.
