COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — HoMedics has brought a new over-the-counter option to the pain relief aisle at pharmacy retailers: the Rapid Relief Electronic Pain Relief Pad, a wireless, portable transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) device.

The company said Tuesday that the Rapid Relief Electronic Pain Relief Pad emits a controlled micro-electronic current — called impulses — through the skin to block the nerves from transmitting pain signals to the body’s pain center, providing fast, targeted relief for aches and pains in the lower back, arms and legs.

Pharmacy retailers now carrying the product include Walgreens, CVS/pharmacy and Walmart, the company said.

HoMedics noted that TENS products have previously been sold behind the pharmacists’ counter or in medical supply stores, often requiring a doctor’s prescription. Also, the company said, traditional TENS devices could be challenging to use because of large control units and unwieldy wires.

The Rapid Relief Electronic Pain Relief Pad comes in two models: one calibrated for the lower back and another for the arms and legs.

Each model offers 15 levels of adjustable intensity. Inside each package is one device, a standard lithium battery (CR2032), a set of self-adhesive replaceable gels (good for up to 50 20-minute treatments), a travel storage case and instructions.

The product carries a suggested retail price of $29.99. Two sets of replacement Rapid Relief Gels, sold separately in the pain relief aisle, cost $9.99.
