New president set for Smith’s Food and Drug

CINCINNATI – Jay Cummins has been named president of the Smith’s Food and Drug Stores division at Kroger Co., and Joe Fey has been appointed president of the mid-Atlantic division.

Cummins, 62, who was president of the mid-Atlantic unit, succeeds Mark Tuffin, who was named senior vice president of retail divisions in December.

Cummins brings over 40 years of retail experience to Smith’s. He began his Kroger career in 1972 as a clerk in Huntington Beach, Calif. In 2002, he was named vice president and general manager of the Food 4 Less Midwest unit. He became president of Los Angeles-based Food 4 Less in 2004 and mid-Atlantic division president in 2007.

Fey, 59, had served as president of the QFC division since 2011. He began his Kroger career as a meat clerk in 1972 while attending Indiana University. He was promoted to a variety of leadership positions in the company’s Central Division and its corporate offices. In 2009, Fey was named vice president of merchandising for the Dillons division.
