Walgreens adds dimension to Balance Rewards

April 22nd, 2013

DEERFIELD, Ill. – Walgreen Co. has expanded the opportunities for members of its Balance Rewards customer loyalty program to earn points for healthy behavior.

The program, which was launched last September, has already awarded more than 15 million points for healthy behavior.

Previously, members have earned points for physical activity by participating in the Walk with Walgreens program, garnering 10 points per mile walked. Now members can log their goals for walking, running or weight management and track their progress through “Steps with Balance Rewards.” They receive 20 points per mile and 20 points per day for tracking their weight.

“By enhancing our loyalty program to further promote healthy behaviors, we’re encouraging customers to take steps to help them achieve overall wellness,” says Graham Atkinson, chief marketing and customer experience officer for Walgreens. “It’s another way that Walgreens helps people get, stay and live well.”

Members can register for Steps with Balance Rewards online or by using the Walgreens mobile app. The robust functionality of the program includes the ability to synchronize one’s healthy physical activity on one site with wireless activity trackers such as Fitbit and BodyMedia, which provide wireless activity trackers, and Withings, which offers wireless scales, to automatically load the number of steps taken. Members earn 20 points for each device to which they are linked.

By making it easier to set goals, track progress and obtain encouragement from other members of the virtual community, Walgreens is helping participants of the Balance Rewards Steps stay motivated to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Members can also publicize their participation by sharing activity badges within various social media.

In addition, Balance Rewards members can earn points by purchasing items featured by Walgreens and Duane Reade in weekly ads and identified by easy-to-recognize blue tags. Moreover, members can earn 500 points for every eligible prescription filled or immunization received.

Walgreens reported earlier this month that customer enrollments for the Balance Rewards program totaled more than 64 million through March.
