Montini tabbed as Rite Aid's top merchant

April 25th, 2011

CAMP HILL, Pa. – Tony Montini has been promoted to executive vice president of merchandising at Rite Aid Corp. He had been senior vice president of category management.

In his new position Montini will oversee field merchandising and new store format development in addition to maintaining his responsibilities for category management.

The company’s new store formats include wellness+ stores, value+ outlets and co-branded Save-A-Lot Rite Aid units. He continues to report to chief operating officer Ken Martindale.

Rite Aid also named Bryan Shirtliff senior vice president of merchandising, a new position. Shirtliff, who had been senior vice president of business development, will continue to be responsible for the company’s store segmentation initiatives and now will also have oversight for front-end merchandising. He will report to Montini.

“Tony has done a terrific job this past year in strengthening our category management department and further building upon our strong relationships with suppliers,” says Martindale. “With his broad-based retail experience and expertise in chain drug merchandising and marketing, he will be a great asset in strengthening our field merchandising capabilities and continuing the development of the new store formats that are part of our segmentation strategy.”

Montini joined Rite Aid in February 2010 as senior vice president of category management. Before that he served as executive vice president and COO of the national advertising agency Marc USA, which has been Rite Aid’s agency of record since 1979, and which he joined in 2004 as senior vice president and director of retail marketing.

His prior Rite Aid experience includes serving as senior vice president of category management from 2002 through 2003 and as vice president of purchasing from 1987 through 1989.

His retail experience includes a stint as senior vice president and general merchandise manager for the drug store business at Kmart Corp. and holding executive merchandising positions with Revco D.S. and Reliable Drug.
