Walgreen Co. has promoted two key executives and changed the reporting structure within its top management team. Rite Aid Corp. is teaming up with Supervalu Inc.’s Save-A-Lot chain to try out a new twist on the food/drug combination store idea. Walmart has promoted Duncan Mac Naughton to executive vice president of consumables, health and wellness, and Walmart.com, putting him in charge of one of four newly created core merchandising areas. A new study from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) underlines the dramatic cost savings afforded by the use of generic drugs in Medicare. A flurry of recent opinion polls indicate that more Americans take a negative view of the health care reforms enacted earlier this year, even though they strongly approve of specific measures. Flu shot programs are now in full force at drug store, discount store and supermarket chains. Medication adherence, compliance and persistence are closely related terms, but all require the involvement of an active patient in order to be successful, according to David Nau, senior director of research and performance measurement at the Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA). Rite Aid Corp. and Just Between Friends, a group that works with community-based organizations, have launched a program that will see the drug chain donate to parent teacher groups when patients switch their prescription to a Rite Aid store.
