Retooling continues at NACDS

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Veteran National Association of Chain Drug Stores executives Fitz Elder and Phil Schneider have agreed to retire as part of a groupwide reorganization.
Elder, who was instrumental in planning and running the NACDS Marketplace Conference and other meetings, joined the association nearly two decades ago. He was named vice president of member relations and chief member relations officer in 2005. He earlier served as vice president of member programs and services, and before that as director of associate member relations.
Schneider, a 17-year association veteran, was vice president of external relations and, for almost the past four years, president of the NACDS Foundation. He earlier served as managing director of public affairs.
Elder’s and Schneider’s positions will not be filled. The foundation, which is focused on pharmacy education, training and research for the public good, will be run by senior vice president of pharmacy affairs Edith Rosato.
The two retirements and the layoff of 12 other staffers are part of the second phase of NACDS’ 1,000-day plan to refocus and realign member programs and activities. A third retirement brings the total number of job cuts to 15, reducing NACDS’ full-time staff by 16%, from 92 people to 77.
The objective of the three-year plan, begun in February 2007, is for NACDS to align its activities with its mission.
“The restructure will optimize staff resources in support of NACDS’ member service priorities while reducing overall expenses, given the state of the nation’s economic environment,” says a statement from the association.
Those priorities are advocating for members in public policy, communicating their role as the face of neighborhood health care and bringing pharmacy and front-end retailers and suppliers together for business, education and dialogue.
NACDS created a Marketing, Communications and Media Relations Department in April 2007 and a Government Affairs and Public Policy Department in November 2007, both of which are part of the plan.
The plan’s new phase consolidates member relations, member services and industry affairs functions from two departments into one and puts more “boots on the ground” in direct advocacy efforts.
It also aligns pharmacy affairs activities more closely with government affairs and public policy activities, as well as marketing, communications and media relations. And it creates efficiencies in financial and administrative functions.
The association is offering outside career counseling to its laid-off staff.
