Sam's Club screenings focus on men's health

June 2nd, 2011

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – In line with its preventive health care message, Sam's Club next week plans to offer free men's health screenings.

The Walmart warehouse club chain said Thursday that on June 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. it will provide free Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) tests, which help detect life threatening health conditions such as prostate cancer. The retailer noted that such screenings typically are offered only to men age 50 and older and often cost more than $200.

Done in recognition of Men's Health Month, the screenings will be conducted by Carmen Ingle & Associates Inc., which Sam's Club said will administer one blood test per person, to be used for a PSA or a TSH test. Men will automatically get the PSA test, and women will receive the TSH test, unless otherwise specified. If a man would like both tests, he can request two blood samples, according to the retailer.

"At Sam's Club, we know personally how crucial these screenings can be. After participating in a free screening last year, one of our young managers received results of elevated PSA levels. He consulted with his doctor, was diagnosed early and credits the early screening with saving his life," Jill Turner-Mitchael, senior vice president of health and wellness at Sam's Club, said in a statement. "According to the American Cancer Society, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Sam's Club hopes that by offering these free screenings, we can encourage men to get ahead of the game and take charge of their health."

Unilever brands including Dove Men's Deodorant and Body Wash are sponsoring the tests, which will take place in Sam's Club pharmacy areas. In addition to the PSA and TSH tests, screening participants will also be given standard body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and blood glucose tests, the retailer said.

Sam's Club added that it's slated to other host free monthly health tests throughout the year, including for children's health, diabetes, vision and women's health. Last month, the wholesale club chain offered free skin cancer screenings, and earlier this year it provided free allergy screenings in select locations and free heart health checkups at its pharmacies nationwide.
