Emblem members keep access to Walgreens pharmacies

November 18th, 2011

DEERFIELD, Ill. – Walgreen Co. has reached an agreement with health insurer EmblemHealth Inc. that allows EmblemHealth and Connecticare members to retain access to the Walgreens pharmacy network in 2012.

Brooklyn, N.Y.-based EmblemHealth, through its companies Group Health Inc. (GHI) and HIP Health Plan of New York (HIP), provides health care coverage and administrative services to about 2.9 million people.

"This agreement ensures that EmblemHealth and Connecticare members will have convenient and timely access to their medications near their homes or when they travel around the country and is evidence of the commitment Walgreens has in working with health plans and other payers to continue serving our patients and customers," Kermit Crawford, president of pharmacy, health and wellness solutions and services, said in a statement Thursday.

Since announcing in late June that it plans to exit the pharmacy provider network of Express Scripts Inc. as of Jan. 1 because of a contract dispute, Walgreens has been working to move forward largely without the pharmacy benefit manager.

Earlier this month, Walgreens launched an awareness campaign with health insurer Coventry Health Care to educate employers in select market areas about how they can maintain employee access to the chain's pharmacy services.

In October, Walgreens announced an agreement to remain in the Express Scripts pharmacy network for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City as well as an offer to Express Scripts to continue serving the Department of Defense's Tricare pharmacy program in 2012. Also in October, Walgreens and Express Scripts agreed to allow members of two health benefit plans in Puerto Rico — MMM Healthcare Inc. and PMC Medicare Choice Inc. — to maintain access to Walgreens pharmacies at the start of 2012.
