Walgreens adds Rx intelligence to Facebook page

ATLANTA – Walgreen Co. has teamed up with Sharecare to launch an "Answers" application that provides visitors to the drug chain's Facebook page access to a searchable drug, supplement and wellness database.

Walgreens and Atlanta-based Sharecare, an expert question-and-answer online platform addressing health topics, said Tuesday that the application is the first of its kind on Facebook and gives Walgreens followers ready access to an interactive portal with valuable health information and resources.

Answers connects the nearly 2 million Walgreens Facebook fans with Sharecare's experts, tools and health care resources to help people better manage their health and stay well, the companies said. The application features information related to a wide array of health topics, such as prescription drugs, disease symptoms, at-home remedies and over-the-counter medicines.

Also as part of its relationship with Sharecare, Walgreens pharmacists can provide answers to thousands of frequently asked health questions.

"With the success of our online health initiatives, such as the ability to chat live with a Walgreens pharmacist 24/7, this is yet another example of our commitment to innovation in the digital space that gives people greater access to Walgreens pharmacists and other clinical experts," Sona Chawla, president of e-commerce at Walgreens, said in a statement. "Our relationship with Sharecare further extends our Answers promise beyond Walgreens retail locations, providing important health care information to customers online, through mobile applications and social media."

Sharecare said it has aggregated hundreds of thousands of the most common consumer health questions with answers provided by some the nation's leading health care professionals and organizations in its portal.

"We are excited to work with Walgreens in developing new ways for consumers to access reliable online health information and tools and specifically establishing the largest drug, supplement and wellness database currently available on Facebook," stated Dawn Whaley, president of Sharecare. "The Answers application enables us to expand access to Sharecare.com and our trusted health experts sharing their expertise on our platform, providing customers, patients and their families even easier and faster access to a variety of their health care needs and interests."
