WOONSOCKET, R.I. – MinuteClinic has opened has opened its first medical clinics in San Antonio.
The CVS Caremark Corp. retail health clinic subsidiary said Thursday that two locations in CVS/pharmacy stores are now open for patients in San Antonio, and a third clinic is slated to open later this year.
MinuteClinic launched its first retail clinics in Texas in 2006 and now has 45 walk-in clinics inside CVS drug stores in the Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio markets.
Andrew Sussman, president of MinuteClinic and senior vice president/associate chief medical officer at CVS Caremark, noted that MinuteClinic can help address a severe shortage of primary health care services in Texas that is expected to worsen over the coming decade.
"Our innovative model of care can be part of the solution to help broaden access to high-quality, convenient and affordable health care services in the San Antonio community and elsewhere in the state," Sussman said in a statement.
CVS Caremark has made MinuteClinic, which now has about 600 locations, a pillar of the company's growth strategy. Larry Merlo, president and chief executive officer of CVS Caremark, said at the company's annual shareholders meeting Thursday that MinuteClinic added 100 clinics in 2011 and reached break-even point in profitability during the year. CVS Caremark aims to have over 1,000 clinics by 2016, he said.
Merlo added that besides expanding its footprint, MinuteClinic will focus on establishing more affiliations with health care systems as well as working with the company's pharmacy benefit management (PBM) unit on unique offerings, such as the Caremark Member Care at MinuteClinic program.
