Walgreens' e-commerce chief joins Express board

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sona Chawla, president of e-commerce at Walgreen Co., has been appointed to the board of directors at Express Inc.

The specialty apparel retailer said late Wednesday that Chawla will also serve on the company's compensation and governance committee.

"I am pleased to welcome Sona to the Board. Sona's particular knowledge and experience in e-commerce, marketing, strategy and general management will be extremely beneficial to Express as we continue to deliver on our four pillars of growth, particularly e-commerce," Michael Weiss, chairman and chief executive officer of Express, said in a statement.

Chawla has been Walgreens' e-commerce president since January of 2011. She joined Walgreens in July 2008 as senior vice president of e-commerce. From 2006 to 2008, Chawla was vice president of global online business at Dell Inc., and from 2000 to 2006 she various positions in the Internet Services Group of Wells Fargo, rising to executive vice president of online sales, service and marketing.

Express said that with Chawla's appointment, its board will include seven members, six of whom are independent. The retailer operates more than 600 stores, mainly in malls and other high-traffic shopping centers and street locations.
