Shoppers Drug Mart fetes 50th digital style

August 9th, 2012

TORONTO – Shoppers Drug Mart Corp. next week plans to launch an online portal to help mark its 50th anniversary in September.

The Canadian drug chain said Thursday that on Aug. 13 it will go live with the interactive "50 Fabulous Years" digital hub, which will enable customers to "share the moments when Shoppers Drug Mart was there for them and their families over the last five decades."

Accessed from the Shoppers Drug Mart website, the portal will feature real-time sharing of individual "moments" integrated with company milestones, spanning the chain's beginnings in the 1960s to the 2000s. Visitors will be able to share their Shoppers Drug Mart moments through Sept. 23.

"With this new digital initiative, Canadians can join the celebration and share experiences that have helped make Shoppers Drug Mart a leading destination for their health, beauty and convenience needs," Sandra Sanderson, senior vice president marketing at Shoppers Drug Mart, said in a statement. "We look forward to hearing about the many ways Shoppers Drug Mart has helped Canadians look, live and feel fabulous over the past 50 years."

Other anniversary activities also are scheduled for September, the chain added. On Sept. 8 and 9 will be National Makeover Weekend, where customers can get a complimentary makeover at participating Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix stores by booking an appointment for a celebratory red or gold anniversary beauty look.

Shoppers Drug Mart founder Murray Koffler talks to customers in the early days of the company.

Also, Canada's first private-label cosmetic brand, Quo, plans to unveil a limited-edition collection featuring a anniversary-themed beauty palette and a commemorative 10-brush set that will be available starting Sept. 8, as well as six Quo by ORLY Glitter FX nail polish shades, due to become available Sept. 18.

Customers, too, will be able to participate in a range of promotions plus a national contest offering chances to win 50 grand prizes. Each entry will require a $10 in-store purchase to receive a PIN that can be registered online to enter the contest.

Overall, Shoppers Drug Mart has 1,340 stores across Canada, including 1,215 Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix drug stores, 56 Shoppers Simply Pharmacy/Pharmaprix Simplement Santé stores, 63 Shoppers Home Health Care stores and six Murale stores. Next month, the retailer plans to begin building a 10,500-square-foot Shoppers Drug Mart store in Edmonton, Alberta, that's slated to open in the spring of 2013.

The company also owns Shoppers Drug Mart Specialty Health Network Inc., a provider of specialty drug distribution, pharmacy and comprehensive patient support services, and MediSystem Technologies Inc., a provider of pharmaceutical products and services to long-term care facilities.
