Navarro makes more vaccines available

August 29th, 2012

MIAMI – Navarro Discount Pharmacy has expanded its menu of vaccines at all of its 31 drug stores in South Florida.

The regional drug chain said Wednesday that because of new Florida regulations allowing certified pharmacists to administer a broader range of immunizations, all of its stores can now provide vaccinations for shingles and pneumonia, in addition to the flu vaccine.

"As a community pharmacy, we are very pleased to be able to offer these expanded vaccinations for adults, educate customers and improve their health and well-being," Albert Garcia, executive vice president at Navarro and president of Navarro Health Services, said  in a statement. "Our certified pharmacists have undergone extensive training and are extremely knowledgeable about shingles, pneumonia and the seasonal flu, illnesses that disproportionately affect the elderly in our community."

According to Navarro, the Florida Department of Health recently approved new regulations giving certified pharmacists the ability to administer Zostavax, a one-time vaccine that can reduce the risk of shingles in people age 60 and older, and Pneumovax, the pneumococcal vaccine to help protect against pneumonia.

The chain has more than 80 trained clinical staff. It has offered seasonal flu shots for individuals, families and employer groups without an appointment at all of its stores since 2010.
