Duane Reade goes live with mobile app

NEW YORK – Duane Reade has launched its first mobile application for iOS devices and is ramping up its involvement in social media.

The New York City drug chain, part of Walgreen Co., said Wednesday that the free app will enhance customer access to pharmacy services, prescription refills, photo printing, offers from its Balance Rewards loyalty program, account information and in-store maps.

The Duane Reade iOS mobile app serves up an array of pharmacy, shopping and photo capabilities.

Duane Reade added that it also has expanded its digital media and social media initiatives to include comprehensive retail social amplification programs, which the chain noted have played a pivotal role in procuring strategic consumer-generated media.

According to the retailer, those programs are a key factor in its Twitter community growth from 15,000 to more than 390,000 followers in seven months, enabling more customers than ever before to engage with their local Duane Reade stores from their mobile devices and elevating the chain to the most followed drug store on Twitter.

"The auspicious introduction of our Google Niantic Labs Ingress mobile gaming collaboration and now an unveiling of the Duane Reade-branded retail mobile application, reinforces our commitment to be relevant on digital mediums where our customers are dedicating most of their time today," Calvin Peters, online/PR manager for Duane Reade, said in a statement. 

Duane Reade's mobile iOS app is available for download at the Apple iTunes store. Users who have upgraded to iOS6 can connect their Balance Rewards account to Passbook; vreate a Balance Rewards account, log in and add rewards card to Passbook; and select a favorite Duane Reade or Walgreens store. And when customers are near their preferred store, Passbook will automatically display their Balance Rewards card.

On the pharmacy side, the app offers such tools as Refill by Scan, which allows users to scan the barcode on their prescription bottle for instant refills, and Refill Reminders, which enable users to sign up to get Rx Text Alerts to know when it's time to refill a script.

Shopping tools in the Duane Reade mobile app include in-store maps, which let customers view floor maps to quickly find items at their Duane Reade or Walgreens stores, as well as a store locator, which enables users to find the nearest Duane Reade or Walgreens location and filter search results based on store type.

Photo capabilities include QuickPrints, which lets customers select images from their iPhone albums to print and pick them up at a local Duane Reade or Walgreens, with no login or account required. Users also can order prints from Facebook albums and pick up their photos at a Duane Reade or Walgreens stores, as well as create and print a PrintWorthy card using a photo from a Facebook albums with likes and comments. A variety of editing tools and filters also are available for photos.

"Our mobile application framework is entirely based on the award-winning Walgreens mobile app and will prove essential to providing our on-the-go customers with efficient pharmacy, photo and loyalty reward tools right at the palm of their hand," Peters stated.

Duane Reade has more than 250 drug stores in the metropolitan New York area.
