Tops, Klingensmith's pharmacies adopt adherence solutions

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets Pharmacy and Klingensmith's Drug Stores have enlisted technology solutions from VoicePort LLC to help pharmacy patients take their medications as prescribed.
Regional food and drug chain Tops has deployed SynchroScript medication synchronization program and two other medication adherence services from VoicePort to improve pharmacy customers' compliance with their prescriptions.
VoicePort said its systems use a front-end portal as a dynamic analysis tool to help pharmacists and pharmacy staff identify patients for the medication sync program. The portal then offers medication recommendations that the pharmacy team can align to get all medicines on a once-monthly schedule, and it calculates the required short fills necessary to help pharmacist complete the task for the patient.
Each Tops pharmacy is also supported with an automated calling system from VoicePort to enroll patients in the sync program, to schedule pharmacist-patient counseling sessions, and alert patients when prescriptions are ready for pickup. VoicePort also provides back-end analytical tools to help measure the pharmacy's progress on keeping patients on schedule with their medications, the company added.

In addition, Tops pharmacies have launched VoicePort's Meducation, a patient education and written translation service to help pharmacy customers comprehend their prescription instructions and to assist those who don't speak English understand the correct instructions on how to properly take their medications.
VoicePort said Meducation offers simplified written instructions in in 18 languages. The service also provides universal medication schedulers, pictograms and device video demos to help patients at the pharmacy, or at home, review their prescription instructions to ensure proper adherence to the medication regimen.
"We are committed to helping all of our patients stay on course to take their prescriptions as directed by their health care provider. The addition of the Meducaiton solution allows us to offer simplified and easy to understand instructions to a majority of our patients, with the chance to translate into 18 different languages," Huckle added.
Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops Markets LLC has 159 supermarkets, including 78 in-store pharmacies, in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania and western Vermont.
"Allowing pharmacy patients the opportunity to pick up multiple prescription medications once a month has shown to significantly improve a patients Proportion Days Covered on their medications," stated Alphonse Sasso, vice president of business development at VoicePort. Meanwhile, Klingensmith's Drug Stores has rolled out VoicePort's prescription adherence services to provide outbound patient notifications. The drug chain has eight stores in western Pennsylvania, around Pittsburgh.

VoicePort's PharmaPhonetics patient solutions provide automated, personalized communications directly to patients from the pharmacy. Services include medication synchronization, prescription pickup and refill reminder notifications, health awareness/medical therapy review messaging, patient counseling, written translation, education and instruction services, mobile applications for the pharmacy or front end, and automated web-based appointment scheduling. The company said its Unified Patient Communication platform enables permission-based phone, text, e-mail, web and mobile notifications dynamically personalized to individual patients and their needs.
