CDMA honors chain drug industry professionals

NOVI, Mich. – The Chain Drug Marketing Association (CDMA) recognized the achievements of retail pharmacy chain, wholesale and supplier professionals at its 88th Annual Trade Expo in Tampa, Fla.

CDMA said Friday that Jim Evans of Evans Drug Center, was named as the CDMA Retailer Member of the Year. Angela Dick accepted the CDMA Supplier of the year Award for Geddes School Supplies.

CDMA president Jim Devine and vice president Judy Aspinall presented two awards to Jack Walker, outgoing chairman of CDMA: the Jack E. Fruth Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of Walker's many years of service to the industry, and the Chairman's Award for his service and contribution as CDMA chairman from 2009 to 2013.

CDMA also announced winners of its Store Brand Awards. Barb Taylor and David Jenkins accepted the Store Brand Pharmacy Chain of the Year award for Fruth Pharmacy, while Doug Barnett and Stephanie Tullos of Brookshire Brothers were named Store Brand Grocery Chain of the Year. In the distribution segment, Raul Rodriguez-Font, Millie Jusino and Janette Perez of Drogueria Betances in Puerto Rico accepted the Store Brand Wholesaler of the Year award.

Private label and store brands were a key focus at the CDMA Expo, including the introduction of the new Quality Choice Vitamins Program.

Store Brand Supplier of the Year awards were presented by CDMA executive vice president John Devine to Joe Ventresca and Tej Sheth of AAA Pharmaceutical and Jerry Spaulding of U.S. Cotton.

Besides the award presentations, events at the CDMA Expo included private-label educational breakouts, the Store Brand Forum, seasonal showcases and a trade floor showcasing the latest products for the front end.

A new educational session, the Quality Choice Store Brand Enrichment Program, focused on the product, price, placement and promotion of private-label products. During the presentation, Kim Leach and Suzy Silvestre of CDMA and Ron Grey of 21st Century Vitamins also unveiled the new Quality Choice Vitamins Program, aimed at helping buyers capitalize on the growing and sustainable vitamin and supplement category, CDMA said.

The Quality Choice Store Brand Forum brought together buyers and suppliers to discuss market data, merchandising and purchasing trends, while the store brand team offered various merchandising ideas featuring a vitamin planogram, sports medicine planogram, baby essentials endcap, shave endcap, medicine cabinet display, checkout stand display and a HyTop general merchandise display.

At the Awards Luncheon, Tim Sharkey and Lawrence Monroe of Owen Mumford spotlighted new diabetic products under the Quality Choice label that enable safe needle removal and disposal. They also opened the floor to questions and answers on the new diabetic legislation and rebates for pharmacies. 

Meanwhile, the trade floor hosted more than 100 exhibitors providing products and services designed to enhance retailers' front-end sales. Suppliers included Miss Jessie's, Medactive, Olba's, Vitabath, KT Tape and Aroma Dead Sea, among many others.

The Product Showcase featured 89 products represented by trade floor exhibitors. Buyers chose Mrs. Grossman’s Paper Co. as this year's Product Showcase winner for its creative Peel & Play Activity Sets.

And the Direct Import Showroom, hosted by CDMA category managers Jaime Zaguroli and Josh Lay, showcased a wide variety of everyday, seasonal, holiday and promotional products, with over 1,000 items across front-end merchandise categories, including consumables and housewares. 

In addition, CDMA announced its 2014-15 board of directors. They include Jack Walker of Walker Drugs, chairman emeritus; Paul White of Medicine Center/Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies, incoming chairman; CDMA president Jim Devine; Lanny Doud of Rochester Drug Cooperative, first vice chairman; Bob Petryszak of Drug Emporium WV, second vice chairman; CDMA treasurer John Devine; and CDMA secretary Judy Aspinall, as well as Robert Blake of Blake Pharmacy, Jay Duprey of Frank W. Kerr, David Jenkins of Fruth Pharmacy, Karla Moschella of Value Drug Co., Allen Taylor of Bullard Pharmacy, Nancy Wharmby of Medicine Center/Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies, Robin Willmott of Quality Care Pharmacies and Jordan Stone of Health Source Marketing. Honorary members are Jim Salley and Linton Young.
