CAMP HILL, Pa. — Gains in both the front end and pharmacy lifted same-store sales at Rite Aid Corp. in March.

Rite Aid said Thursday that for the four weeks ended March 28, comparable-store sales climbed 4.3% year over year. That was up from a 3.3% comp-store sales increase in February.

In the front end, same-store sales rose 2.5% in March. Comparable pharmacy sales grew 5.1%, reflecting a negative impact of 167 basis points from introductions of new generic drugs, which carry lower prices. Prescription count at comparable stores edged up 2.5% for the month.

Overall drug store sales in March were $2.026 billion, up 4.1% from $1.947 billion a year earlier. Prescription sales represented 69.9% of drug store sales.

As of March 28, Rite Aid operated 4,568 drug stores, compared with 4,584 stores a year ago.
