Mylan launches generic version of Famvir

April 20th, 2011

PITTSBURGH – Mylan Inc. has begun shipping famciclovir tablets, a treatment for herpes.

The company said Wednesday that its Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. subsidiary is introducing famciclovir tablets in strengths of 125 mg, 250 mg and 500 mg.

The herpes medication is a generic version of Novartis' Famvir Tablets, Mylan reported.

Famciclovir tablets had U.S. sales of about $196 million in 2010, according to IMS Health figures cited by Mylan.

An antiviral drug, famciclovir is designed to slow the growth of the herpes virus to help the body fight off the infection and lessen its symptoms. The medication is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses including genital herpes, cold sores, shingles and chicken pox.
