Watson releases Yaz generic

January 19th, 2012

PARSIPPANY, N.J. – Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. has begun shipping a Vestura, an oral contraceptive.

The company said late Wednesday that the product was launched by its Watson Pharma Inc. subsidiary.

Vestura (drospirenone 3 mg and ethinyl estradiol 0.02 mg ) is a generic version of Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals' Yaz birth control product, according to Watson. In late November, Watson announced that it gained Food and Drug Administration approval for Vestura and was in patent litigation with Bayer regarding the product.

Vestura is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy and the treatment of moderate acne in women ages 14 years and older

Yaz and its generic versions totaled U.S. sales of about $510 million for the 12 months ended November 30, 2011, according to IMS Health figures reported by Watson.
