Watson releases Prometrium generic

March 5th, 2012

PARSIPPANY, N.J. – Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. has begun shipping an authorized generic version of Prometrium capsules.

The company said Friday that its product, progesterone capsules in 100mg and 200mg dosages, were launched as part of an agreement with Abbott Laboratories.

Under the supply agreement, Abbott manufactures and supplies Watson with all dosage strengths of the authorized generic product. Watson markets and distributes the product in the United States, and the parties share profits based on sales of the product.

Prometrium capsules are indicated for use in the prevention of endometrial hyperplasia in non-hysterectomized, postmenopausal women who are receiving conjugated estrogen tablets. They are also indicated for use in secondary amenorrhea.

For the 12 months ended Jan. 31, Prometrium had sales of about $198 million, according to IMS Health data reported by Watson.
