Kirby Lester eases filling of 90-day scripts

May 22nd, 2012

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Pharmacy processing of 90-day prescriptions via the Kirby Lester KL30 dispensing and verification system has been simplified thanks to a software update.

The pharmacy technology provider said Tuesday that the KL30 offers an effective solution for automating a retail pharmacy's or outpatient pharmacy's high-volume maintenance medications, even challenging tablets such as metformin and potassium chloride.

The KL30 includes 30 or more pharmacy cassettes to automate frequently dispensed medications. High-volume cassettes are available to streamline dispensing for physically large tablets.

Kirby Lester noted that all medications dispensed via cassette on the KL30 benefit from a unique double-count process, ensuring accuracy.

In addition, the pharmacy automation company said, the KL30 advises the technician of the correct vial size to choose for each prescription, which eliminates the guesswork of selecting the right vial for a 90-day fill. As a result, the KL30 is used to dispense and verify all daily prescriptions, 90-day fills and employee prescriptions.

"Dispensing 270 or 360 'horse pills' at one time can be a time-sapping, mind-numbing effort," stated pharmacist Jeff Papo, owner of Tuminaro Pharmacy in Hopewell Junction, N.Y. "The old-fashioned counting tray can't accommodate a large quantity of tablets, not to mention how inaccurate and tedious hand-counting can be. The KL30 at our pharmacy is just a superior tool to handle 90-day fills. It takes a big burden off my pharmacy staff."

Kirby Lester added that the KL30, together with its KL60 robot, can fully automate 90 or more of a pharmacy's most frequently dispensed medications. That can mean 50% or more of a pharmacy's total daily orders. The remaining orders are counted and verified with the KL30, whose software is designed to make sure the right patient gets the right medication and dosage.
