September 11th, 2012

HYDERABAD, India – Dr. Reddy's Laboratories has launched metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets in the U.S. market.

The company said Tuesday that the medication, which gained Food and Drug Administration approval last month, is available in strengths of 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg and 200 mg and in bottle counts of 100 and 500.

According to Dr. Reddy's, the product is a bioequivalent generic version of Toprol-XL from AstraZeneca.

A beta-blocker, Metoprolol is used to treat angina and hypertension, as well as to treat or prevent a heart attack.

Toprol-XL and its generic had U.S. sales of about $1.13 billion for the most recent 12 months ending in June, according to IMS Health figures cited by Dr. Reddy's.
