McKesson helps deliver eCoupons to Rx patients
November 27th, 2012
MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – McKesson has partnered with Physicians Interactive to provide its eCoupon tool to health care providers, enabling them to easily provide prescription drug savings to patients and, in turn, spur medication adherence.
Physicians Interactive said Tuesday that it's collaborating with McKesson Patient Relationship Solutions (MPRS) to jointly deliver eCoupon, an automated pharmaceutical voucher and coupon distribution solution for clinicians who use electronic health records (EHRs) and electronic prescribing software.
The eCoupon tool from Physicians Interactive works as follows: Prescribers select the medication they wish to prescribe from a drug list or the patient’s medication history and add it to their script pad. A preliminary eligibility check is performed to see if the patient might qualify for a voucher or coupon. If available, a coupon displays for the medication when the prescriber lands on the script pad to process the script they have selected. When the script is processed, the eCoupon is automatically sent to the pharmacy (and can be printed for further convenience). The patient then redeems the savings when filling the prescription.
"With our extensive experience in implementing comprehensive adherence programs, our partnership with Physicians Interactive accelerates our ability to appropriately add value to e-prescribing technologies," stated Derek Rago, vice president of marketing and strategy at McKesson Patient Relationship Solutions. "This enables more meaningful physician-patient interactions, which has been shown to increase patient engagement that ultimately will help patients be more adherent resulting in better health outcomes."
Physicians Interactive noted that the impact of coupons and vouchers at the point of care has been reinforced by industry research, including a recent doctor survey by McKesson, which found that 70% of physicians emphasized the importance of sharing medication discounts at the point of prescribing as a way to promote medication adherence.
Health provider access to eCoupon programs directly within the prescriber's workflow can improve medication adherence and enables additional support services to help patients overcome personal adherence barriers, according to Physicians Interactive.
"We are proud and excited to announce this collaboration with McKesson, a respected and recognized leader in the healthcare industry," commented Donato Tramuto, chief executive officer and vice chairman of Physicians Interactive. "Our partnership will empower providers with unmatched access to a greater range of relevant patient benefits integrated directly into the point of care workflow."
