ScriptPro prints QR codes on Rx labels

August 7th, 2013

MISSION, Kan. – ScriptPro automation products now have the ability to print QR bar codes on a pharmacy's prescription label.

The pharmacy technology provider said Wednesday that having QR (Quick Response) codes on a medication label will allow patient to more manage refills and communicate with the pharmacy more easily.

Instead of on the prescription paperwork, the QR barcode from a ScriptPro system is printed directly on the prescription label in case a patient misplaces or discards the paperwork received when the prescription is dispensed, according to ScriptPro.

ScriptPro noted that the prescription-specific QR code on the label may be scanned using a smartphone, which initiates the refill process. The pharmacy can also direct the customer to a website providing additional information.

The company added that the QR code provides new opportunities for pharmacies to communicate and interact with their customers and increase patient care.

For example, ScriptPro said, other pharmacy functions that patients can access via the QR code might include refilling prescriptions on the go, reviewing prescription details, setting up reminders for when a prescription is due for refill or ready for pickup, selecting how to receive reminders (suc as via text message or e-mail), and finding weekly specials or coupons.
