Upsher-Smith to ship morphine ER capsules

August 30th, 2013

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. – Upsher-Smith Laboratories Inc. plans to make morphine sulfate extended-release capsules (CII) commercially available on Sept. 4.

The pharmaceutical company said Thursday that the release will mark the first generic entrant for the 10-mg ER morphine sulfate capsule dosage strength.

Upsher-Smith's line of morphine sulfate ER capsules will come in seven dosages: 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, 50 mg, 60 mg, 80 mg and 100 mg.

Upsher noted that historically there have been a limited number of morphine sulfate generics available, and the company "used its extensive formulation experience to overcome the challenges presented."

An opioid pain medication, morphine sulfate is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. Extended-release morphine is intended for uses in which around-the-clock pain relief is required.
