Hershey, 3D Systems partner to create 3D-printed treats

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Hershey Co. and 3D Systems have entered into a multiyear agreement to explore and develop opportunities for using 3D printing technology in creating edible foods, including confections.
3D Systems (3DS), a Rock Hill, S.C.-based provider of 3D printing design-to-manufacturing solutions, said Thursday that the alliance brings together Hershey's world-class food science and manufacturing expertise with 3DS' 3D printing technology to deliver new consumer experiences.
"We believe that innovation is key to delivering relevant, compelling consumer experiences with our iconic brands," stated William Papa, vice president and chief research and development officer for Hershey. "Whether it's creating a whole new form of candy or developing a new way to produce it, we embrace new technologies such as 3D printing as a way to keep moving our timeless confectionery treats into the future."
Plans call for the companies to co-develop a variety of 3D printed chocolate and nonchocolate products as well as to commercialize a new class of consumer and "prosumer" 3D printers for edibles.
