Vicks adds DayQuil/NyQuil Severe to cold/flu lineup

January 14th, 2014

CINCINNATI – Vicks has expanded its line of cold and flu remedies with DayQuil Severe and NyQuil Severe, which it said provide relief from "your worst cold and flu symptoms."

Vicks DayQuil/NyQuil Severe Cold & Flu Relief is available in a liquid formula twin pack, as well as in stand-alone liquid and caplet (DayQuil only) forms.

The Procter & Gamble brand said Tuesday that the new products come in the wake of last year's cold and flu season, one of the worst the nation has seen in years, and amid a rise in flu-related activity this season.

Vicks DayQuil Severe is formulated to help people get through the worst flu symptoms during the day, offering relief from aches, fever, sore throat, nasal/sinus congestion and pressure, cough and chest congestion. And to enable cold and flu sufferers to get the rest needed at night, Vicks NyQuil Severe relieves aches, fever, sore throat, nasal/sinus congestion and pressure, sneezing, runny nose and cough, P&G said.

DayQuil Severe Cold & Flu Relief comes in liquid (8 fl. oz. and 12 fl. oz. sizes) and caplet (12-, 24- and 72-count sizes) forms, as well as in a twin-pack with NyQuil Severe Cold & Flu Relief (both 12 fl. oz. liquid). NyQuil Severe Cold & Flu Relief also comes as a stand-alone liquid (8 fl. oz. and 12 fl. oz. sizes).

"Knowing that all colds and flu are not created equal, we introduced Vicks DayQuil and NyQuil Severe to help those who experience multiple cold/flu symptoms," according to Dave Tomasi, North America marketing director for Vicks. "With the current incidence rise in mind, we encourage people to take steps to prevent the onset of the flu, but if it's unavoidable, consumers know they can rely on Vicks products to help treat their symptoms."

Vicks reported that the recent spike in flu, based on information from the IMS Health Flu Activation Network (FAN), is the largest increase in 15 years of data collection. The activity shows a 193% rise in the number of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) incidents for the two-week period ended Jan. 4 from the previous two weeks. Fever incidents were up 60% during that period, and 71% of the localities tracked in the data are in an 'Alert' status, meaning that incidences are on the rise.
