Chattem launches OTC Nasacort Allergy nasal spray
February 4th, 2014
BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – Chattem's Nasacort Allergy 24HR Nasal Spray has gone over the counter in the United States.
The Sanofi consumer health division said Tuesday that Nasacort Allergy 24HR is the first and only medicine in its class to be available at full prescription strength without requiring a prescription.
According to Chattem, Nasacort gained Food and Drug Administration approval to switch from prescription to OTC status in October, and it's now available at retailers nationwide.
"Now that Nasacort Allergy 24HR is available over the counter, the millions of people who suffer from seasonal and year-round allergies have easier access to the gold standard treatment for nasal allergy symptoms," commented Zan Guerry, chief executive officer for Chattem.
More than 60 million Americans suffer from seasonal and year-round hay fever and other upper respiratory allergies, Chattem reported.
The company noted that Nasacort works differently than other OTC treatments to relieve the full range of nasal allergy symptoms, including nasal congestion, by stopping more of the chemical responses that cause those symptoms. The product is indicated for use in in adults and children ages 2 and older.
"The launch of Nasacort Allergy 24HR represents our long-standing commitment to helping individuals living with allergies," stated Anne Whitaker, president of North America pharmaceuticals for Sanofi US. "This milestone builds on our heritage in the allergy category and our expertise in prescription to over-the-counter switches as we continue to expand our global consumer health care organization."
