MeadWestvaco software establishes 'pharmacy home'
August 21st, 2014
RICHMOND, Va. – MeadWestvaco Corp. has announced the commercial availability of the Avive Multimed pharmacy system, designed to yield benefits for health care providers, their patients and payers.
MeadWestvaco (MWV) said Wednesday that Avive, a software-based solution establishes a pharmacy home, synchronizes medication regimens, improves medication adherence, supports reimbursement for services such as medication therapy management and improves CMS Star Ratings performance.
MWV Healthcare and partner LTCPCMS Inc. developed Avive to decrease the complexities of polypharmacy. Avive is intended to provide pharmacists and health care management staff with software tools and workflow to create synchronized, personalized medication regimens to foster patient adherence by accommodating their input and activities of daily living.
"We have successfully used the Avive solution in a test environment for nearly two years on a very adherence-challenged patient population with multiple chronic diseases," stated Tom Grinnan, senior director for health care innovation and EU adherence at MWV. "The data has shown that Avive is distinctly successful in achieving a full pharmacy home and improving refill rates. We are now ready to license this unique program to pharmacy partners, developers and PBMs."
Designed for use in retail pharmacy, mail order, call center and PBM environments, Avive addresses the rising number of people in the United States suffering from co-morbidities who are taking an increasing number of medications, prescribed by a number of physicians and purchased from a myriad of pharmacies.
Research shows that by synchronizing these medications with one pharmacy home, patients can experience better health outcomes, health-related expenses are lowered and refill rates rise dramatically, MWV noted.
Additional benefits provided by Avive include the ability to create customized medication regimens with multiple patient pack systems, including Rx vials and bottles, calendared blister packs and pouch/strip pack systems; develop customized hours of administration (HOAs) and universal medication schedules (UMS); and drive data transfer of simplified labeling and regimen calendars to pharmacy printer and automation equipment, without significant modification of pharmacy host systems.
The system also provides unique methodology for prescription synchronization and personalized regimen creation as well as checks for multi-med drug regimen compatibility. MWV added that Avive also creates patient regimen databases and reporting and develops a call and follow-up schedule to update and modify the customized regimen over time, not after initial synchronization.
