DEERFIELD, Ill. — Next week, Walgreens plans to offer injury prevention tips and advice in hosting Senior Day at its stores nationwide.

The drug chain said Thursday that along with the pharmacy staff’s discussion about avoiding fall injuries, stores will offer informational materials, including a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) “Home Fall Prevention Checklist for Older Adults” that identifies ways to make the home safer.

On Walgreens Senior Day, to be held Tuesday, Aug. 1, customers who are Balance Rewards members will receive 500 bonus points if they ask a pharmacy staff member about fall injury prevention. Also, Balance Rewards members who are age 55 and older or AARP members can get 20% off eligible, regular-priced merchandise that day.

“With our Walgreens presence in communities throughout America, and our trusted relationship with customers, we have a great opportunity to help older adults and caregivers make homes and other environments safer and avoid injuries from slips and falls,” Rina Shah, vice president of pharmacy operations for Walgreens, said in a statemnt. “These injuries are often highly preventable and education is the key to prevention.”

Citing CDC research, Walgreens noted that falls are the leading cause of serious and even fatal injuries among seniors, and on average more than one in four people age 65 and older suffer from a slip or fall each year.

“Falls threaten older Americans’ independence and safety and generate enormous economic and personal costs that affect everyone,” stated Debra Houry, director of the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. “Together, everyone can reduce the risk of falling and prevent fall injuries.”
