Martie Moore, chief nursing officer for Curad, has been on media tour discussing this year’s cold and flu season and preventive measures that people can take to lessen the chance that they get sick.

Most recently, she appeared on ABC7 Eyewitness News in Chicago (see video above) and on WTLV-TV NBC First Coast News in Jacksonville, Fla.

“It’s really important that people do get the flu shot, and not too late,” Moore told ABC7 Chicago.

Moore also talked to ABC7 Chicago about how to help prevent the spread of germs. “Viruses love to travel. And they travel through your hands and they travel through the air,” she said, explaining that people should avoid touching their “nose zone” — their nose, eyes and lips.

Curad, she said, offers an effective solution with the Curad Antiviral Facemask. The company calls the product a first-of-its-kind face mask that protects against the flu. The mask neutralizes 99.99% of tested strains of influenza viruses on five minutes contact, according to Curad.

“It actually inactivates the virus. It’s fantastic,” Moore told ABC7 Chicago. “In our culture, we’re a little uncomfortable wearing masks, so I just throw a scarf around my face [to hide the mask]. It prevents the virus being live. If somebody sneezes or coughs in your face, it actually detonates that virus.”

Moore, too, noted that hand washing is key to helping prevent people from picking up or spreading the flu virus from things such as escalator railings, remote controls and keyboards.

People can find out their risk level for catching the flu and get a personalized protection plan by taking Curad’s Flu Fighter Quiz, which Moore said points out the importance of such factors as nutrition and overexertion from intense exercise and overwork, which can lower the immune system. She talks more about flu risk factors and flu prevention in a video on Curad’s Facebook page.
