GROTON, Conn. — Walgreen Co.’s Take Care Health Systems subsidiary is managing a work-site pharmacy opened at General Dynamics Electric Boat, a maker of submarines for the U.S. Navy.

The new pharmacy, located at Electric Boat’s headquarters and shipyard in Groton, Conn., will be open six days a week and serve about 14,000 people, Walgreens said Wednesday.

The facility is the second on-site pharmacy that Take Care and Electric Boat have opened for the company’s employees. The previous location opened in 2007 at Electric Boat’s Quonset Point hull fabrication and outfitting facility in Rhode Island.

Walgreens said the new work-site pharmacy now offers Electric Boat employees, retirees and their dependents enrolled in the company’s health plan a convenient place to receive prescriptions and pharmacy services.

“Electric Boat currently recognizes the benefits associated with a work-site pharmacy, and we’re excited to expand our partnership and collaborate on a second location," Peter Hotz, divisional vice president at Walgreens and president of Take Care Health Employer Solutions, said in a statement.

"Work-site pharmacies enable ongoing communication and education between patients and pharmacists, create greater outcomes with medication adherence and demonstrate that when innovative companies like Electric Boat invest in employer health programs, patient results improve and savings are realized — creating the best outcomes for all parties," Hotz commented.

According to Walgreens, workplace pharmacies are increasingly seen by companies and their employees as a highly accessible, cost-effective outlet for the delivery of high-quality services. By managing the pharmaceutical needs of employee communities, the on-site pharmacy programs help mitigate rising health care costs and improve medication adherence, in turn resulting in better health outcomes, Walgreens explained.

"The establishment of this pharmacy is an important part of Electric Boat’s comprehensive health and wellness initiative," stated Bob Nardone, human resources vice president at Electric Boat, which has more than 10,000 employees. "Our goal is to provide greater convenience, lower costs for employees and the company, and an opportunity for our team members to work closely with an expert pharmacist who will be an important part of their individual health and wellness plan."
