WASHINGTON —  On Thursday, members of the prescription drug supply and payment chain, including pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmacies, including specialty and managed care pharmacies, and health plans, sent a letter to Vice President Mike Pence and congressional leaders affirming the safety and resiliency of the drug supply chain, and calling for public-private sector collaboration to keep the supply chain functioning well throughout this unprecedented health system challenge.

“PBMs are working together with members of the prescription drug supply and payment chain to facilitate Americans’ access to needed prescription drugs during this global pandemic,” said Pharmaceutical Care Management Association President and CEO JC Scott.  “To avoid shortages not only on medications to treat COVID-19 but other essential therapies, it is imperative that the private sector and state and federal governments work together on solutions that balance access to needed medications with the potential for shortages.”

To help Americans access safe, effective medications, prescription drug supply and payment chain companies are collaborating with each other and with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and other federal, state, and local government agencies. Through FDA-led and industry-supported surveillance efforts, real-time data on potential drug shortages will allow for optimal management of any disruptions to existing supplies. Timely data will also help facilitate adjustments and improvements to patient care plans.

In addition, federal, state, and local government leaders should avoid policies that may have an unintended impact on the supply of pharmaceuticals in the United States.
