DUBLIN, Ohio — Cardinal Health Inc. has announced the early renewal of its distribution agreement with Walgreen Co. to supply pharmaceuticals to its more than 7,600 retail pharmacies across the country.

The new agreement extends into 2013. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Walgreens is a valued partner for Cardinal Health, and we are proud to continue our long-standing relationship,” Cardinal chairman and chief executive officer George Barrett says. “The new agreement builds on the fundamentals of our existing relationship, and the terms were factored into the fiscal 2011 guidance we provided in October.”

In another announcement, Cardinal’s health specialty solutions business said its P4 health care unit has signed agreements with AmeriHealth and PerformRx and extended its multiyear relationship with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield.

These business opportunities follow the announcement to implement the “P4 Pathways” program for oncology practices within the Highmark BlueCross BlueShield network in Pennsylvania.

“Our new agreements with AmeriHealth and PerformRx networks are proof positive that our physician-centric approach to developing cancer care pathways is valued by physicians and payors alike,” Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions president Meghan Fitzgerald says. “These agreements highlight our approach to align the interests of physicians and payors to improve patient outcomes and quality of care.”
