WASHINGTON — The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) released the following statement upon the introduction of the Over-the-Counter Monograph Safety, Innovation, and Reform Act, bipartisan legislation to modernize the regulatory system overseeing the vast majority of over-the-counter (O-T-C) medicines – called the O-T-C Monograph system. The legislation is sponsored by House Energy and Commerce Committee members, including Representatives Diana DeGette (D, Colo.), Bob Latta (R, Ohio), Debbie Dingell (D, Mich.), and Brett Guthrie (R, Ky.).

“The drumbeat around O-T-C Monograph reform has not slowed since it was first introduced in 2017,” said CHPA president and chief executive officer, Scott Melville. “Democratic and Republican lawmakers in both the House and Senate recognize the importance of making commonsense regulatory reforms to modernize the system that oversees the majority of O-T-C medicines. Doing so would increase the efficiency and responsiveness necessary to protect consumer health and spur innovation. The House has already passed O-T-C Monograph reform three times and Representatives DeGette, Latta, Dingell, and Guthrie continue demonstrating their steadfast commitment to seeing the legislation over the finish line. CHPA shares their commitment and applauds them for their tireless efforts. We look forward to seeing the bill advance.”
