WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health has entered into clinical affiliations with three regional health systems.

In its latest collaborations, CVS has partnered with Baptist Health System in Alabama; Premier Health in Ohio; and Community Health Systems (CHS) affiliated hospitals, including Commonwealth Health in Pennsylvania, Tennova Healthcare in Tennessee and Northwest Medical Center, which includes Oro Valley Hospital in Arizona.

The health care networks’ patients will have access to clinical support, medication counseling, wellness programs and other services at CVS Health’s retail pharmacies and its MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics.

CVS and the medical centers will integrate electronic medical records, allowing CVS to provide information on medical interventions and medication adherence to physicians, the company says.

In addition, CVS will supply the systems with summaries of patients’ medical histories and visits to its pharmacies and MinuteClinics.

CVS has 7,700 retail pharmacies where pharmacists fill prescriptions and counsel patients on adherence to chronic-disease medications. It also has 900 MinuteClinic locations.

“We look forward to working with these leading regional health systems to develop collaborative programs that improve patient outcomes, lower costs and help people on their path to better health,” says Troyen Brennan, chief medical officer at CVS Health.

MinuteClinic also has entered into a clinical collaboration agreement with Lifespan, Rhode Island’s largest health system.

The new affiliations bring the number of CVS’ partnerships with major health systems and health care providers to nearly 50 nationwide, including 10-hospital MedStar Health, based in Washington, D.C.

Affiliations with health care providers can give CVS an expanded role in patients’ health, the company says, and can help keep patients out of emergency rooms as well as reduce repeat visits to doctors’ offices and hospitals.
