Duane Reade sweetens value message

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Duane Reade is betting that New Yorkers know a good deal when they see one.

The metropolitan New York drug store chain is making a big push to convey its value message. Last week, the retailer launched a new customer rewards program, FlexRewards, that promises more rewards and lower prices. And during the fall, the company introduced a mini magazine, The Duane Reader, that highlights new products and eye-catching deals, as well as an online coupon gallery powered by Coupons.com.

The moves dovetail with Duane Reade’s strategy to create a unique shopping experience that also caters to the everyday needs of New Yorkers.

Duane Reade has begun offering printable coupons on its web site through an online gallery powered by Coupons.com.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Coupons.com said Tuesday that the drug store chain’s customers will now find a coupon page on duanereade.com that offers nearly $60 in savings on staple items, ranging from soup and cereal to vitamins and pet food.

To use the coupon site, duanereade.com visitors simply browse the available offers, click to "clip" the coupons that they want and then print the coupons and redeem them at checkout.

Duane Reade is promoting the new coupon gallery on its home page with a box that says, "Click, Print and Save! Visit Duane Reade’s New Coupon Site," and provides a direct link to the coupon start page.

The gallery offered three pages of coupons, spanning such product categories as personal care, health care, food, beverages and beauty care and including both branded and Duane Reade store-brand items. Customers can prioritize their view of the coupons by category or brand. Also, a calculator tool at the top of the page displays the number of coupons clipped and the total money saved.

New York City residents printed approximately 15 million dollars worth of online coupons through the Coupons.com network in 2009.3 Since the launch of Duane Reade’s coupon gallery, deal-seekers have been racking up savings on items in the following most popular categories: Vitamins, Nutritional Snacks, Ready-to-Eat Cereal, Pain Relief and Ice Cream.

Coupons.com currently powers online coupon galleries for other leading retailers, including CVS, Kmart, Safeway and Walgreens. In 2010, Coupons.com will continue to add additional retailers across the country into its extensive partner network.
