LEESBURG, Va. — Former Medco Health Solutions Inc. executive Peter Duran has joined the executive team at RxAlly.

Duran, who spent the last 15 years with Medco, is serving as vice president and chief privacy officer of the 22,000-member pharmacy alliance. In that role, he is responsible for ensuring that RxAlly’s privacy practices comply with all applicable local, state, province, county, federal and industry-specific laws and regulations.

“We are excited to welcome Peter to the RxAlly leadership team,” chief executive officer Bruce Roberts comments. “As our organization continues to grow, Peter’s experience and expertise in privacy and compliance is an invaluable asset to our mission.”

Duran says he sees RxAlly as an important organization in helping community pharmacy play a bigger role in the nation’s health care system.

“I am thrilled to join RxAlly,” he says. “I share RxAlly’s passion for improving patient outcomes and lowering costs, and am excited to work with the leadership team and network pharmacies to advance the role of pharmacists nationwide.”

During his decade and a half with Medco, Duran was instrumental in building the pharmacy benefits management company’s privacy program, including the processes pertaining to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) individual rights, record requests, data use and risk assessments.

He also led Medco’s implementation of the changes dictated by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), state-sensitive drug laws and designated caregiver projects.
