Fight against flu now in full swing

NEW YORK — Flu shot programs are now in full force at drug store, discount store and supermarket chains.

Kerr Drug, for one, has launched an unprecedented effort to meet the demand for flu immunizations. The company began its flu shot campaign earlier than ever this year, providing vaccinations at all of its stores without requiring customers to make appointments.

“People only need to get one flu shot this year because the 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against H1N1 as well as two other types of influenza expected to be seen during the season,” says Kerr pharmacist Debbie Pruss. “We encourage everyone to follow the Centers for Disease Control’s new recommendations for flu vaccines, and with immunizations available during almost all operating hours it has never been easier to get a flu shot.”

Kerr delivered 42,000 flu vaccinations last year and expects to provide more this year.

For its part, CVS Caremark Corp. announced that it will partner with Direct Relief USA to offer up to $5 million in free flu shots to community clinic and health center patients who lack health insurance. Direct Relief USA is a nonprofit organization that works with 1,100 clinics and health centers in all 50 states, providing free medications and supplies for low-income and uninsured patients.

Vouchers that can be redeemed for a free flu shot at any CVS/pharmacy or MinuteClinic will be distributed by CVS Caremark and Direct Relief USA to participating clinics and health centers.

“With every CVS/pharmacy and MinuteClinic location providing flu vaccinations this year, we want to make sure that as many people as possible have access to a flu shot, including patients for whom cost may be a barrier,” said CVS Caremark president and chief operating officer Larry Merlo.

Walmart, meanwhile, is offering shots in more than 4,100 of its discount and Sam’s Club stores for $24. “We know that families are concerned about their finances, so we are bringing our customers a flu vaccine solution at a convenient and affordable price,” states John Agwunobi, president of Walmart’s health and wellness division.

In the Mid-Atlantic region, Giant Food LLC has begun offering flu shots for $30, or $25 with a Giant loyalty card.
